Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is the most common cause of viral infections in humans. In the present study the serological prevalence of IgG and IgM antibodies against HSV-1 was determined in children with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). An increased prevalence of IgG antibodies was found in LRTI patients in comparison to controls (100 and 40%, respectively), and 90% of the patients were IgM positive. Thus, the development of an IgM response indicates active HSV infection in LRTI patients. The prevalence of IgG antibodies was higher in LRTI patients than in controls and was also higher in LRTI patients with serologically positive IgM (100 vs. 60%). High levels of IgG antibodies against HSV-1 were more often found in LRTI patients with serologically positive IgM (16/22 vs. 5/7) than in LRTI patients with serologically negative IgM (8/11 vs. 2/5). In contrast, IgG antibodies against HSV-1 were more often found in LRTI patients with serologically negative IgM (9/15 vs. 2/9) than in controls (2/11 vs. 0/12).
