The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is the agency responsible for overseeing and approving vehicle emissions programs in California. The team is submitting a number of changes to meet the California zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate. The changes include a fuel tank cap that doubles as a carbon fiber battery charger, a charger and a power battery, and a ‘Plug-in Hybrid’ option that would allow drivers to charge the battery at home and away from a charger. One of the more significant changes submitted by Tesla is a ‘Design for Zero Emissions’ tool. The tool is described by the company as “a vehicle diagnostic tool that reveals any significant CO2 emissions reductions from the entire propulsion system and active powertrain components, including over-the-air software updates.” The tool will allow Model Y owners to “design a fleet of zero emission vehicles to meet their unique transportation needs.” Tesla’s team said in a release: “This tool will provide customers with the option to select from a range of driving scenarios, providing insights into the emissions performance of the vehicle, identifying the most efficient configuration, and reducing the size of their fleet to meet their goals.” The submission was led by Tesla’s California operations team.
